BODY IN SUITCASE: Online friend allegedly killed her after rape attempt

PETALING JAYA: NG Yuk Tim, the 15-year-old girl reported missing on Monday after she was allegedly dropped off at the Kelana Jaya LRT station by a friend whom she  met online, is believed to have been murdered.

This came about following the discovery of a body stuffed in a green suitcase in Jalan Kebun Nenas, Shah Alam, last night.

The discovery was made following a confession by the suspect, a 23-year-old man.

Selangor Community Policing Association chief Kuan Chee Heng said the revelation came to light after a meeting between the association and Ng's mother and several friends concerning her disappearance.

Kuan, speaking at the police headquarters here yesterday, said the meeting was organised to shed light on her disappearance.

The suspect was among those at the meeting as he was purportedly the last person to have had contact with her. It is understood that the suspect and Ng had met via an online social network.

"I noticed that he (the suspect) had peculiar injuries on his hand. As he was the last person who had sent her off to the LRT station, I decided to question him further," said Kuan, a former policeman.

After questioning, the suspect confessed that he had killed Ng.

The suspect claimed that he brought Ng, who had just finished her Penilaian Menengah Rendah examination, to his house in Cheras.

When the suspect allegedly attempted to rape Ng, she retaliated by biting and scratching him, causing him to strike her with a dumbbell.

He then allegedly stuffed her body in a suitcase and dumped it in Jalan Kebun Nenas.

Kuan brought the suspect to the district police headquarters here, where he was questioned for several hours.

He led a police forensics team to the scene where he allegedly dumped the body.

The body was recovered at 10pm. Police also went to the suspect's home to gather evidence.

Police seized the suspect's van, which was believed to have been used to transport the body.

At press time, police had yet to issue a statement on the case.

Government wins appeal, Herald banned from using word 'Allah' over public safety

PUTRAJAYA: Catholic weekly The Herald will not be allowed to use the word "Allah" to refer to the Christian God, ruled the Court of Appeal.

The panel, chaired by Justice Mohamed Apandi Ali, overturned a High Court decision and unanimously ruled Monday in favour of the Government's appeal, saying that the minister had not acted in any way that required a judicial review.

The court also found that there had been sufficient material considered by the minister in taking action under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.

The court set aside all orders made by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in conjunction with its allowing the Church's judicial review back in 2009, with no order as to costs.

The panel, which also included Justices Mohd Zawawi Salleh and Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim, each prepared their own judgments, though Justice Mohamed Apandi read a brief summary, saying the full judgment was over 100 pages long.

"Our common finding is that the usage of Allah is not an integral part of the Christian faith. We cannot find why the parties are so adamant on the usage of the word," he said.

The court found that such usage of the word would cause confusion and that in the interest of public safety, chose to grant the Government's appeal.

"The welfare of an individual or group must yield to the interest of society at large," said Justice Mohamed Apandi, adding that this should be read alongside the constitutional freedom of religion.

Senior federal counsel Suzanna Atan represented the Government, while lawyers Porres Royan and Annou Xavier acted as counsel for the Church.

Xavier told reporters that they will only be able to confirm in several days time whether the Church would appeal to the Federal Court.

The Home Ministry and Government were appealing against the Dec 31, 2009 High Court decision in allowing the church's judicial review to lift the Ministry's ban on the use of the word "Allah" in The Herald to refer to the Christian god.

On July 9, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur had filed an application to the strike out the Government's appeal although it was later unanimously denied by another Court of Appeal panel.

The church, led by Archbishop Murphy Pakiam, had filed the judicial review on Feb 16, 2009, naming the Home Ministry and the Government as respondents.

They sought, among others, a declaration that the decision by the Home Ministry on Jan 7, 2009, prohibiting the use of the word 'Allah' in The Herald was illegal and that the word 'Allah' is not exclusive to the religion of Islam.

The weekly, published in four languages, has been using the word 'Allah' as a translation for 'God' in its Malay-language section, but the Government argued that 'Allah' should be used exclusively only by Muslims.

Khairy suggests counting Gelang Patah votes to decide Youth vice-chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the result of voting at Gelang Patah youth division should be used in deciding the vice-youth chief after two candidates received equal number of votes.
He pointed out the possibility of dispute involving the parties involved if the popular votes method was used to settle the stalemate.

"If we can count the votes at Gelang Patah division, there is no need for popular votes. If we use the popular vote method, it will lead to conflict.

"It is better if we can settle it through vote counting in Gelang Patah," he told a press conference with Umno vice-presidential candidate Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein after a Rangkaian Sahabat Muda programme here tonight.

A total 191 Umno youth divisions concluded their elections yesterday except for Gelang Patah which was postponed due to internal problems.

Earlier, Umno Election Committee chairman Tan Sri Tajol Rosli Ghazali when announcing the election results at Menara Datuk Onn tonight said Jamawi Jaafar and Khairul Azwan Harun, each received 73 votes, from 190 divisions.

As such, he said the result for number two post would be decided based on the counting of popular votes.

Popular vote is based on the actual number of votes which is given by the delegates to every candidate.

Khairy said: "I have discussed with Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan whether we want to implement the suggestion by Tan Sri Tajol, namely, to count the popular votes, or we settle the case of Gelang Patah division."

Meanwhile, Jamawi when met by reporters, said he was confident the result would favour him if the popular vote counting was implemented based on his record of acceptance at the divisions.

But, he stressed that he would accept with an open heart if the result went against him.

Meanwhile, Khairul Azwan when contacted, declined to comment on the matter

BAT’s share price falls due to cigarette price increase

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — British American Tobacco (BAT) emerged top loser as at 11.44am today as its share price fell as much as 50 sen to RM62 after the company raised its cigarette price. The increase is effective from today. Yesterday, BAT announced it was raising its cigarette prices by RM1.50 for the 20-stick pack, both for its premium and aspirational premium-brands, respectively 

BAT’s brands include Dunhill, Pall Mall, Kent and Peter Stuyvesant. Kenanga Research said it understood that the price increase came in response to a 14 per cent excise duty hike. It brought the total excise duty per box of 20 sticks to RM5. 

“Although BAT has been making good progress in strengthening its market leadership over the years, the overall legal market consumption has been declining due to increasing competition from illicit white cigarettes. 

“Should this trend continue, BAT’s domestic volume could be affected further, despite ongoing efforts to diversify the group’s exposure in the fast-growing contract manufacturing segment,” it said in a research note today. 

The research house maintained a “market perform” call on BAT and raised its target price to RM63 from RM61.36, previously. Meanwhile, HLIB Research in its note said the price hike announcement turned out to be a negative surprise and the move is the third over the last two years. 

In June this year BAT announced a three per cent increase in cigarette prices citing rising operating costs. “We believe the price increase would result in a larger impact towards BAT’s cigarette volume as the hike is much steeper as compared to previously,” it added. The research house maintained a “hold” call on BAT with a target price of RM59.86. – Bernama - 

Man on trial for cutting love rival's penis

A Frenchman goes on trial for cutting his girlfriend's lover's penis off and flushing it down the toilet.

Blaise Fragione, 38, admits that in October 2008 he knocked out the victim, named only as 'F.', with a blow to the head, severed most of his penis with a razor knife and threw it in the toilet.

Fragione says that he 'lost it' after F. came to tell him he was having a relationship with 'Mado', his partner of 14 years and mother of his two children.

"The sudden revelation of this adultery made him lose control," says Fragione's lawyer, Marc Ceccaldi.

"He is well aware that he caused a significant trauma."

Fragione faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of 'aggravated assault accompanied by mutilation'.

500kg bull gores man shielding grandkids

A 56-year-old farmer was gored and seriously injured while he tried to protect his grandchildren from a 500 kg bull that had escaped from its owner on Tokunoshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.

According to police, the bull had wandered into the garden of Eio Okuyama in the town of Isen at about 2.50 pm. Saturday.
